I may have said it before, and if I did so, I'm happy to say it again - I consider "Goddess" to be one of the finest poems you've written, Mike - and you've written a tremendous amount, including translations. So I'm not at all surprised that it was the first poem Kevin Roberts published in the first issue of Romantics Quarterly. Kevin had great taste and was a truly great poet in his own right.

Goddess

for Kevin N. Roberts

"What will you conceive in me?"

I asked her. But she

only smiled.

"Naked, I bore your child

when the wolf wind howled,

when the cold moon scowled . . .

naked, and gladly."

"What will become of me?"

I asked her, as she

absently stroked my hand.

Centuries later, I understand;

she whispered, "I Am."

Dialogue of the Poets

(for Michael R. Burch)

It shouldn’t be a cocktail conversation.

(I don’t in truth drink mixed drinks, anyway.)

Rather, the threatened verbal conflagration

Should splash with gold and red the quiet gray

Of ordinary discourse. So I say.

(I’m drinking Irish whiskey now, but neat.)

What are the clear conventions of the day?

Which should we keep? And which with sneering greet?

The madmen howl. The sober-minded bleat.

Some shake their fists at Heaven, some at space

Unlimited. All closure’s incomplete.

This isn’t cards, so damn your hidden ace!

I cannot simply tell you what I think.

(I think it’s time to pour another drink.)
