My mom read and re-read (I remember the book looking very worn and well read) a true crime book about a woman who killed her children. Finally, years later, I asked her why. She said she wondered how someone could do that. I realized recently that had a couple of different meanings...

Mothers killing their children does happen and is hard to explain, except as severe depression.
