“Dracula” meant “Son of the Dragon” in Dracula’s day, but came to mean “devil” later on. I’ve been to Snagov, where Dracula’s body was buried, minus the head. Of course, Vlad was never considered a vampire until Stoker latched onto the name. Vlad was Romanian, but the character in the book was a Szekeler or proto-Hungarian.

If you’re interested in vampires, the best book is Paul Barber’s “Vampires, Burial, and Death.” But it’s not for the squeamish.

Brides of Dracula

Jonathan in the castle understood

Your rich allure, O Brides of Dracula!

Lying there on the bed, he felt lust gnaw

Away at all within him that was good.

You tittered then as only vampires could.

His puny reason shrank. Desire grew raw.

Solicitor? He quite forgot the law.

His own blood was a red-light neighborhood.

Then, momentary puritan, the Count

Stepped in – and didn’t scruple to insist.

He wouldn’t let you open up the fount

That, still alive, was longing to be kissed.

Of blood our hero kept the same amount.

I’ll bet he always dreamt of what he’d missed.
