The greatest of all unknown poets is, of course, Anonymous.

Wulf and Eadwacer

It is otherwise with us.
Wulf's on one island; I'm on another.

My hopes pursued Wulf like panting hounds,
but whenever it rained—how I wept!—
the boldest cur clutched me in his paws:
good feelings, to a point, but the end loathsome!
Wulf, O, my Wulf, my ache for you
has made me sick; your seldom-comings
have left me famished, deprived of real meat.
Have you heard, Eadwacer? Watchdog!
A wolf has borne our wretched whelp to the woods.
One can easily sever what never was one:
our song together.
I do not claim that my interpretation of this famously ambiguous poem is the "correct" one. In my poem, the speaker is a defiant early feminist, the first #metoo poet of the English language. She is disgusted with her bloodthirsty tribe, who have driven her lover Wulf away. Why? Perhaps because they wanted to sacrifice him to the "gods." Perhaps because he broke some primitive law. We simply don't know.
But whatever the reason, the speaker claims that it is ungelic, or "otherwise" with her. She is not like her ferocious, bloodthirsty people. They are alien to her. Rather, she dreams of her lover Wulf and follows him in her hopeful, loving thoughts. But even as she dreams of Wulf, she is being raped by another man, Eadwacer. It is not clear who Eadwacer is. He may be a priest (Heaven-Watcher), a guardian (Property-Watcher), a family member appointed to "protect" her "purity" (a Watchdog), or perhaps her husband against her will.
The speaker defiantly sneers at and insults Eadwacer. He is unable to please her. He is deficient in "meat" compared to Wulf. Wulf has a bigger sex organ and knows how to use it. She mocks her would-be "lover" and "protector." Eadwacer has made her pregnant, but she abhors him. Something terrible has happened to their whelp, or child. Their "song together" will be easily severed, because they were never really one. She waits for Wulf to put an end to Eadwacer, so they can be reunited. When she speaks of Wulf, it is with real love and longing.
In my interpretation this is not so much the first English poem about a love triangle, as it is the first English poem about a love/sex triangle. Someone should turn it into a movie and turn my translation into the theme song.

The Wife's Lament

where can he be?
Then I, too, left—a lonely, lordless refugee,

Deor's Lament

A similar poem to the one above, in time and language, is "Blow Northerne Wynd," which has been called the "most ancient love poem in the English language," perhaps composed during the reign of King John.

Layamon's Brut is a 32,000-line poem composed in Middle English that shows a strong Anglo-Saxon influence and contains the first known reference to King Arthur in English. The passage above is a good example of Layamon's gift for imagery. It's interesting, I think, that a thousand years ago a poet was dabbling in surrealism, with dead warriors being described as if they were both men and fish.

This is my translation of a wonderful poem by an early Scottish master, William Dunbar. "Sweet Rose of Virtue" has been one of my favorite poems since I first read it. I decided to translate it myself, to make it more accessible to modern readers:
Sweet Rose of Virtue

delightful lily of youthful wantonness,

If the tenth line seems confusing, it helps to know that rue symbolizes pity and also has medicinal uses; thus I believe the unrequiting lover is being accused of a lack of compassion and perhaps of withholding her healing attentions. The penultimate line can be taken as a rather naughty double entendre, but I will leave that interpretation up to the reader!

Charles d'Orleans (c. 1394-1465) was a medieval French poet who also wrote poems in Middle English. I consider him one of the world’s great love poets and he penned the first Valentine poem, or at least the first one still extant.

How truly brilliant and atmospheric 'How Long the Night Is'. It is indeed a little known treasure - a true gem!
These are all good, and the translations of the Greek epigrams for the most part well capture their typical economical elegance. I think though that the version of the famous Simonides epigram alters its basic meaning too fundamentally to be called even a free translation, though there would be nothing wrong with calling it a response to or commentary on the original.
One reason the epigram is famous is how it praises the Spartans in a characteristically "Laconic" form -- the Spartans were famous using few words. I forget now where I read an anecdote about a time when the Spartans and the Athenians were fighting a war together as allies, and an Athenian detachment, being in difficulties, sent the Spartan forces a long message detailing what aid they needed. The Spartans sent back a reply that the Athenians' message was too long for them to understand (was this the first instance in history of TL;DR?) So the Athenians sent the Spartans another message saying simply, "Need food." The Spartans sent them food, along with a reply message pointing out that the word "Need" had been superfluous.
