Some terrible duds in there (two by Prince, for starters) but I spose it demonstrates just how personal these things are. I would nominate John Martyn’s version of Spencer the Rover.

If you think "When Doves Cry" is a dud, we exist in different dimensions.

I will add your nomination and credit you.

Yeah sorry, I just don’t get Prince at all. It’s probably a me problem.

No one can argue with what you don't like.

I don't care for many of his songs but I think some are masterpieces:

When Doves Cry

Little Red Corvette

Nothing Compares 2 U

Raspberry Beret

I don’t care for him, but he had a few good songs. From 1999 and Purple Rain.

Layla and Immigrant Song are ‘moving’?!?

In the same way as Highway Star, Bomber and Back in Black I suppose.

‘Who Knows Where The Time Goes’?

Expand full comment
Michael R. Burch's avatar

Layla is a very moving song.

Immigrant Song is moving if one has empathy for the victims of the Vikings. It's a different song from Back in Black, having to do with real history and real "fields of gore."

I will add ‘Who Knows Where The Time Goes’, thanks.

You mentioned here one of the songs that always brings me to tears - Vincent. I hear the first chords and I become a puddle. another song that makes me cry every time, as if the greatest disaster has struck me personally, is Down Easter Alexa by Billy Joel. I think Shameless by him is the most beautiful love song I have ever heard.

Vincent is a great, great song.

Down Easter Alexa is another great song.

And I have long been a fan of Until the Night. When it was on the air, I would stop working to listen to it.

I saw Garth Brooks sing Shameless in concert and I thought it was his best song.

Like A Rolling Stone (yes I actually like it, not just posting to look cool).

In My Time Of Dying, and Kashmir.

The Good’s Gone, Circles, I Can See For Miles, Tommy, all of it together (but especially The Acid Queen), and pretty much all of Who’s Next.

Warning, War Pigs, Wheels Of Confusion, Snowblind, The Thrill Of It All.

Suicide Solution, Flying High Again.

Too many others I can’t think of right now, but, by Joni Mitchell, Allman Brothers Band, Chicago, Nirvana.

I applaud the time and effort you took to make this list.

Additionally, you note quite a few songs I absolutely enjoy listening to, as well as quite a few I’ve never heard (amazing, since I consider myself a listener with wide interests.)

Thank you ‼️😁

Will add.

I'm a Neil Young fan. In high school I wrote a poem modeled after "Old Man" for one of my teachers:

teacher

by michael r. burch

circa age 15

------------------------

teacher, take a look at my life,

for it has just begun

and u think that i am “misinformed”

merely because i'm young;

but the truth is often hidden

(what lies lurk behind ur eyes?)

and maybe Puff can tell u

where the Dragon flies.

teacher, take a look at my life:

urs is a dull-edged knife

(the white-hot blade long blunted).

now ur as cold as ice.

still, when u come to class,

act like u know it all,

for if u show insecurity,

surely wee will folderol.

I was channeling Young, Peter Paul and Mary, and e. e. cummings. I used "wee" for "we" as in tiny, insignificant people.

I have poems from that time channeling Young, Dylan and the Incredible String Band.

Young has many moving songs ( Out on the Weekend) and is still writing them (Music Arcade…)
